Juju Child Born in New Orleans and raised in Mississippi, Juju Child (R.Jamil Williams) is an authentic bluesman who blends the roots of Africa with the boogy of Mississippi.
He started playing guitar at the age of 10 while growing up surrounded by a family of well-known gospel and blues musicians and singers. Seeking a means of escape from the poverty of rural life in the South, he entered Alcorn University where the creation of his first band seeded his desire to pursue a career in show business.
While attending school and touring Nightclubs and Universities, Juju Child wrote and recorded his first song.
As he studied Jazz with legendary Jazz instructor Alvin Batiste at at Southern University he performs with Billy Cobham and Clark Terry.
Juju Child headed for Chicago where he wrote for a music magazine and composed for fashion shows, commercials and special events.
In 1990 juju Child returned to the city of his birth and immediatly began working with a variety of top performing and award winning groups.
Juju Child toured America and appeared on stage opening for artists such as The Wailers, Lionel Hampton, Herbie Hancock, Temptations, Sade and The Neville Brothers.
After years performing with major blues, raggae and zydeco artists throughout America, Juju Child came to Paris.
Since his first arrival on the European music scene, Juju Child has thrilled audiences in Amsterdam, London and Paris. Juju Child has been described as a composite of Sly Stone and Johnny Lee Hooker with his unique blend of blues and African soul music. His band” Hypnotic Roots Ensemble” has been described as a “ball of fire poured on the audience” full of ”Roots and Soul”., which is by the way is the name of his latest CD.
His live performances infuse a hypnotic-driving groove with thoughtful lyrics and soulful roots-style vocals.
These elements combined give his music a hypnotic feel that audiences really appreciate and drive them to move. If you want to put the music in a box you can call it blues. But if you search for a new kind of blues, one that’s, soulful, funky and very sophisticated. JuJu Child takes you to all the right musical roots
